Wasim Akram, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team, has rejected an offer to serve as the CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The board, in search of someone to oversee cricket-related affairs, approached Akram due to his expertise and leadership qualities.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds the position of Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Interior, reached out to Akram with the proposal to either become CEO or provide advisory services.
Nevertheless, Akram cited personal commitments as the reason for declining the role. Currently based in Karachi and frequently traveling to Australia to be with his family, Akram mentioned that relocating to Lahore was not feasible at this time.
Even though he turned down the role, Akram indicated his readiness to help Pakistan cricket in any capacity, with no expectation of payment. Naqvi shared his plans for the PCB with Akram during their conversation, and Akram found them convincing and gave his support.
After Akram’s decision, the PCB approached Waqar Younis, another former Pakistani cricket icon. Younis, who also lives in Australia, agreed to assume the position. He recently had a meeting with Naqvi in Lahore to discuss the possibility of his appointment, although an official announcement has not been made yet.
Waqar Younis has a history with the PCB, having previously been the national team’s bowling coach and head coach at different points in time. However, his past tenures ended under unfavorable circumstances. Younis now faces the task of leading the PCB as it gets ready to host the ICC Champions Trophy next year.
An important issue Younis will have to deal with is the involvement of the Indian cricket team in the tournament. Due to security concerns and political tensions, India has not played in Pakistan since 2008. Convincing India to participate in the Champions Trophy will be a crucial challenge for Younis in his new position.
