Former Lahore Nazim Aamir Mehmood closely observed the local government system during General Musharraf’s era. At that time, he was very active in politics and met hundreds of people daily at his political office. Later, he stepped back from politics, perhaps to try his luck in other fields.
After leaving politics, Aamir Mehmood expanded his mother institute, Punjab Colleges. He established the University of Central Punjab and launched Dunya Media Group. In real estate, Union Developers became a successful venture for him. His name also appeared in an airline project. All these projects were handled in a professional and organized way and turned into major successes.
Now, after almost two decades, Former Lahore Nazim Aamir Mehmood has quietly returned. But he clearly says he does not want to be called a politician. On many forums, he stated that he should not be considered a political figure. Instead, he has presented a proposal that Pakistan should be divided into provinces on the basis of divisions. He argues that this would free people from “Takht Lahore” and “Dargah Zardari.” His arguments are strong from both administrative and technical points.
He raised this idea through the platform of private universities. A session was also scheduled at USP Multan, where he involved students in the debate. The most positive part of these discussions is encouraging young people to speak with confidence.
Questions remain. Is this the first time the issue of provinces is raised? How will PML-N and PPP respond? Does the establishment stand behind this plan? Will this be included in the 27th Amendment? And what about Imran Khan—what could his response be?
