Iran President Pezeshkian Says Country Faces ‘Many Problems’ Under ‘Crushing’ US Sanctions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says fresh US sanctions are worsening economic pressure on Iran, as Washington prepares tougher measures and Tehran warns of a growing economic crisis.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged that his country is facing “many problems” as the United States intensifies economic pressure through a new sanctions campaign aimed at further isolating Tehran.

“I understand we have many problems in society right now. We are trying to prevent these as much as we can,” Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast on Iranian state television on Sunday.

Pezeshkian’s comments came after the United States announced plans for a new round of sanctions designed to increase pressure on Iran’s economy. He accused US President Donald Trump of waging what he described as a “full-scale economic, military and security war” against Iran.

“He says he is imposing the most crushing and terrifying sanctions on Iran,” Pezeshkian said.

The Iranian president said his government was working to limit the impact of the economic pressure on ordinary citizens, particularly as inflation, unemployment and cost-of-living pressures continue to weigh on households.

“We are striving with all our hearts to overcome inflation, livelihood problems, unemployment, and to secure the future of the people, so that they can live with dignity and pride,” he said.

The latest US campaign comes after nearly six months of war between Iran and the United States and Israel. Iran’s economy was already under severe pressure from longstanding international sanctions, while the conflict has further damaged infrastructure and disrupted economic activity.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce details of the new economic measures on Monday. He has described the planned action as potentially the toughest sanctions campaign in US history.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has rejected the threatened sanctions as a sign of US desperation, saying the measures would not defeat Tehran. Iran has continued to resist Washington’s demands despite the mounting economic and military pressure.

The economic crisis has also contributed to growing domestic tensions. Iran has experienced repeated waves of protests in recent years, with inflation, currency instability, and declining purchasing power among the issues fueling public anger.

Pezeshkian has nevertheless signaled support for diplomacy, saying it would be better to end the conflict while Iran retains what he described as strength and dignity.

The latest developments leave Tehran facing a difficult combination of military pressure, economic isolation and domestic hardship, while Washington prepares to widen its campaign against Iran’s remaining financial and trade links.
