World Cup: Ronaldo’s world cup campaign comes to an end

Spain ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dream with a dramatic 1 to 0 win over Portugal, thanks to a stoppage time goal from Mikel Merino that sent the European champions into the quarter finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match between the old rivals was short on chances, with both teams struggling to create clear openings. As the game looked set for extra time, Merino made a perfect run between Portugal’s defenders and calmly fired a low shot into the net in added time to seal Spain’s victory.

The defeat is expected to bring the curtain down on Ronaldo’s World Cup career. The 41 year old had already said before the tournament that this would be his final World Cup. Even though Portugal fell short, Ronaldo leaves behind one of the greatest careers in football history. He played in six World Cups, became Portugal’s all time leading scorer and most capped player, won the UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League titles, claimed five Ballon d’Or awards, and broke countless scoring records for both club and country. His passion, leadership and ability to deliver in the biggest matches have inspired millions of fans around the world.

Portugal’s exit also marked the end of Roberto Martinez’s time as head coach. The Spanish manager announced after the match that he is leaving the team after three and a half years in charge.

Spain will now face either the United States or Belgium in the quarter finals as they continue their bid for another World Cup title. While Spain celebrated a famous win, the night also marked an emotional farewell to one of football’s greatest legends.
