Veteran actor Firdous Jamal faces backlash after repeated controversies, raising questions about legacy, bitterness, social media attention, and the painful fall from grace.
By Imran Malik
There was a time when the name Firdous Jamal represented class, talent, dignity, and serious acting in Pakistan’s television industry. He was counted among the finest performers of his generation — an actor whose screen presence commanded respect and whose body of work earned awards, admiration, and a lasting place in drama history.
But sadly, in recent months, he has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Instead of being remembered for his craft, Firdous Jamal now appears trapped in a cycle of controversy, bitterness, and attention-seeking commentary. It is painful to watch a senior artist, once respected across generations, become more known for inflammatory statements than meaningful work.
The Mahira Khan controversy
Many were shocked when he publicly criticized superstar Mahira Khan, questioning not only her performances but even her ability to act. Constructive criticism is part of art, but dismissive personal attacks rarely age well — especially when they come from senior figures expected to guide rather than belittle.
Private family matters turned public
Then came media reports of disputes involving his own sons and the breakdown of his marriage. Personal matters are always complex, and outsiders rarely know the full truth. But when family conflicts spill into public space, they often damage everyone involved.
From podcast to “potcast”?
Most recently, his appearance on a podcast — or as critics jokingly call it, a “potcast” — created fresh backlash after he made harsh and insensitive remarks about fellow legendary actors, including late and respected names.
Mocking contemporaries such as Khayam Sarhadi, Talat Hussain, Abid Ali, Rahat Kazmi and others did not look like honesty. It looked like unnecessary disrespect.
Why do legends chase social media noise?
This raises a bigger question: why do some respected veterans fall into the modern trap of outrage for views?
Social media rewards conflict, controversy, and shock value. Unfortunately, even accomplished people can get pulled into that race. But viral attention is not the same as relevance, and noise is not the same as legacy.
A psychological cry for attention?
It would be unfair to diagnose anyone from afar. But repeated public anger, bitterness, and attacks often signal unresolved emotional struggles, loneliness, or frustration. Sometimes what looks like arrogance may actually be pain.
How many hits matter now?
Another uncomfortable question people ask is: how many unforgettable super-hits has he given compared to the stars he criticizes today? Fair or unfair, audiences now compare output, impact, and consistency.
Can this stop?
Yes — if he chooses silence over spectacle.
There is wisdom in the old saying: Silence is better than an ill-mannered discussion. A respected senior actor still has time to restore dignity, mentor younger talent, and let his performances speak louder than podcasts ever could.
Because stars do not truly fall when they age.
They fall when they forget grace.
