Legendary cricketer Wasim Akram has joined the increasing chorus of voices that have come out to raise an outcry against the toxicity that social media has come to represent.
Appearing on a TV show recently, the former Pakistan skipper said he was tired of the constant barrage of negative comments and unsolicited advice that continued to come from faceless people.
The Sultan of Swing bemoaned the fact that social media, after all, had been given to humanity for the purpose of spreading love and knowledge. Now it was reduced to a platform that spreads hatred and negativity. He added that many users create fake profiles just to spew venom and spread negativity.
The former Pakistan captain folded his hands and implored people to stop doling out advice to successful people. People with less than a handful of followers and having achieved little in life are out there giving advice to people with millions of fans; it was ironic, he said.
Instead, he stressed the importance of being positive and motivating one another through good words. He shared from personal experience that he only heeded good, constructive words from well-meaning people and not the negative comments at all.
Wasim Akram further said that success in real life is not money; it is good people around, and the wisdom from those who truly care is an added advantage.
