In a groundbreaking move Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the “Magnificent Punjab” tourism initiative aimed at transforming 170 historical sites into world-class tourist destinations. This ambitious project is set to establish Punjab as a regional and international hub for history heritage and tourism.
The initiative includes the restoration of 101 gurdwaras and 53 churches with comprehensive mapping of locations already completed. Punjab first-ever comprehensive tourism policy has also been prepared and a summary for the establishment of the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority has been submitted for cabinet approval.
One of the major highlights of this project is the allocation of Rs. 240 million to modernize the 131-year-old Lahore Museum. This collaboration with UNESCO ensures the preservation of Punjab 1,000-year-old history. Additionally a digital tourism app has been introduced to provide visitors with essential travel information guidance and services directly on their mobile phones.
For the first time Punjab has been divided into nine tourism zones ensuring the structured promotion of its historical and cultural heritage. Restoration projects include the “Charming Lahore” Project with Rs. 400 million allocated for preserving Mall Road historical significance. The Fort Kohna Qasim Bagh Restoration tender process has been completed and funds have been released. The Uch Sharif Pilgrimage Route will also feature special pathways and facilities for visitors.
CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that protecting history heritage and culture is a responsibility to future generations ensuring Punjab legacy shines globally. She stated (Punjab has been home to multiple religions civilizations and cultures. We will showcase the vibrant heritage of the land of five rivers).
To accelerate progress the restoration of historical sites has been integrated into the Annual Development Plan with tenders set to begin in July. This project is a game-changer for Punjab tourism industry and is set to attract visitors from all over the world.
