The United Arab Emirates has launched relief programs as part of its amended Residency Amnesty Process, where illegal expatriates can correct their residency position or exit the emirate without punishment.
The new policy allows anyone who possesses old visas or lapsed work permits to avail new opportunities in employment from the date of announcement up to 60 days. Many individuals will benefit from the much-needed lifeline to settle without proper documentation in the country.
According to the GDRFA, which is in charge of the amnesty program, it said that the scheme will afford individuals the chance to either legalize their status or to leave UAE without further delay.
The move aligns with the government’s broader initiative to keep the residency records of expatriate workers who work in the country in the Middle East region transparent and streamlined.
Amnesty on residency violators
This process offers two significant channels to individuals whose residency permit has expired as expatriates.
Changing employers: One can change to a new employer, whereby the new company applies for a new work permit
Remaining with the existing employer: People who want to remain with their employer can renew residency permit if the employer requests for renewal.
Overstayed visa holders
This amnesty also covers overstayers whose visas have long been outstayed. Two possible actions have been proposed:
Working for a new employer: New employer can apply for work permit, and the individual can pursue further with legal stay in the country
Exiting the country: To those who are exiting, an Exit Permit can be applied, and they are allowed to exit the UAE without the filing of any case or apprehension of apprehension and fine
Expired Work permits
Even those whose work permits have expired are not excluded. If he falls into one of the two categories, it does not matter:
Work with the same employer: When residency and work permits lapse, this means the employee can continue working with his previous employer and all complaints registered against him will be sorted out in the process of renewing the work permit
Change employer: Otherwise, his new employer will make an application for a fresh work permit
A Safety Net for expats
Very many regard the amnesty program as a welcome intervention. Many will carry with them a new deal for overstayers and unemployed who, through it, can rectify their status and continue to live in the UAE or leave without punitive fines.
The 60-day amnesty is not only a much-needed respite but also in line with the humane regulating of the UAE’s foreign workforce. Given the considerably large number of expatriates working in this country, this amnesty is arguably a crucial step to keep the UAE at par with the international world as a hub for employment, yet it will be made into compliance with the law.
Further details of the procedure can be found at the official website of GDRFA, and the authorities are alerting the concerned with immediate actions to be taken in time.
