Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have demanded action against late-night host Jimmy Kimmel following remarks about Melania during a recent comedy monologue.
The controversy began when Kimmel, during a satirical segment based on the annual White House correspondents’ event, joked that the first lady had “the glow of a future widow.” The comment quickly drew criticism from Trump supporters and political figures, who described it as offensive and inappropriate.
The issue intensified after a separate security scare at a Washington gala attended by President Trump and senior officials, where an armed man allegedly attempted to enter the venue. Following the incident, Melania Trump posted on social media that individuals who spread hatred should not be given access to millions of homes daily.
President Trump echoed her remarks and reportedly urged ABC to take immediate action against Kimmel.
Responding on his Monday show, Kimmel said the line was intended as light satire and not a call for violence. He added that he deeply regretted the fear caused by the Washington incident and rejected hateful or violent rhetoric.
The White House press secretary also criticized what she called dangerous language from some media and political circles, saying such rhetoric can normalize violence. Meanwhile, a religious broadcasting group reportedly filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, arguing that jokes involving death contribute to a culture of hostility.
The clash is the latest chapter in a long-running feud between Trump and Kimmel, who has frequently criticized the president on his late-night program.
ABC has not issued an immediate public response. Kimmel’s show has aired since 2003, and his contract was recently extended through 2027.
