LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province from 1st to 10th Muharram (June 17–26) to maintain law and order and strengthen security arrangements during the holy month.
According to an official notification, only approved processions and religious gatherings (Majalis) will be allowed, while any new religious activities or traditions will be prohibited.
The restrictions include a ban on the public display of weapons and explosive materials without prior permission from the competent authority. Authorities have also prohibited provocative slogans, gestures, statements, and comments that could incite sectarian tensions or hurt public sentiments.
The notification further bans the promotion or distribution of material and speeches that spread sectarian or ethnic hatred.
As part of enhanced security measures, residents along procession routes will not be allowed to establish observation posts on rooftops or store stones, bricks, bottles, or other objects that could pose security risks. Spectators will also be barred from gathering on rooftops and shop platforms located along procession routes.
The Home Department stated that a ban on pillion riding will be enforced only on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel will be exempt from this restriction.
The Punjab government has directed relevant departments to widely publicize the orders to ensure public awareness and compliance during Muharram.
