Long-Delayed Film Finally Reaches Audiences
After years of delays, censorship hurdles and multiple title changes, Diljit Dosanjh’s much-awaited film Punjab 95 has finally been released on OTT—but under a new name, Satluj. The film, directed by Honey Trehan, is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose work exposed one of the darkest chapters in Punjab’s history.
The movie’s journey to release has been as dramatic as its subject. Originally announced as Ghallughara, it was later renamed Punjab 95 during the certification process before eventually being released as Satluj after a prolonged battle over censorship and approval.
Why Was the Film Renamed?
According to the filmmakers, the original title Punjab 95 could not receive final approval during the certification process. To secure its release, the makers adopted the title Satluj, named after the river that flows through Punjab.
Director Honey Trehan has stated that while the title changed, the film itself was released without the cuts the team had resisted for years. Diljit Dosanjh also said he would not have promoted the film if any cuts had been made to its content.
The title change marks the third name for the project. It began as Ghallughara, later became Punjab 95, and has now officially released as Satluj.
Who Was Jaswant Singh Khalra?
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a Sikh human rights activist who gained international attention for investigating the alleged illegal cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab during the militancy period of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
His investigation uncovered records suggesting that many people had disappeared after allegedly being taken into custody. Khalra presented documents and evidence that brought global focus to the issue and became a prominent voice for human rights in Punjab.
In September 1995, Khalra was abducted outside his home in Amritsar. Investigations later led to the conviction of several Punjab police officials in connection with his abduction and murder. His case remains one of India’s most significant human rights cases.
What Is the Film About?
Satluj follows Khalra’s efforts to uncover the truth behind alleged enforced disappearances and illegal cremations. The film portrays his determination to seek justice despite threats and mounting pressure from authorities.
Diljit Dosanjh plays Khalra, while the cast also includes Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan. The story explores themes of justice, courage and accountability during a turbulent period in Punjab’s history.
A Four-Year Struggle to Release
The film remained stuck for years because of certification issues and repeated delays. Reports indicated that earlier versions faced numerous objections, leading to prolonged negotiations before the project finally secured a digital release.
Following the OTT premiere, Diljit Dosanjh described the film as one of the most meaningful projects of his career and paid tribute to Jaswant Singh Khalra’s legacy. He said the story reflects courage, conviction and humanity, and expressed gratitude that audiences can finally watch it after a long wait.
A Story Beyond Cinema
The release of Satluj is significant not only because it ends years of uncertainty but also because it brings the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra to a wider audience. By focusing on a real-life activist who dedicated his life to exposing alleged human rights violations, the film revisits an important chapter of modern Indian history and highlights the enduring importance of justice and accountability.
