The Ministry of Information Technology has announced the procedure for eligible citizens to receive a relief of Rs100 per litre on petrol under a special fuel subsidy scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi vehicles and small cars.
According to the ministry, citizens seeking the petrol subsidy will first have to register themselves through SMS. Applicants are required to type REG, followed by their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number, and send the message to 9771.
The registration process will also require details related to the vehicle, including the vehicle registration number, provincial code and registration date.
After completing registration, eligible citizens will be able to obtain a fuel token by sending TOK to 9771. The fuel token will then have to be presented at designated petrol stations to receive petrol at the subsidised rate.
The ministry stated that the relief programme will begin in Islamabad from the night between Monday and Tuesday. In other parts of the country, the relief will start from the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
Under the scheme, eligible citizens will receive a Rs100 discount per litre of petrol. However, the subsidy will be subject to monthly fuel limits based on the type of vehicle.
Motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi vehicles will be eligible for up to 20 litres of subsidised petrol per month. Meanwhile, cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc will be eligible for a maximum of 30 litres of subsidised petrol per month.
The initiative is aimed at providing financial relief to citizens who use smaller vehicles for transportation amid high fuel costs. The ministry has advised eligible citizens to complete the registration process and follow the prescribed SMS procedure to access the subsidy.
Citizens should ensure that their CNIC and vehicle information is entered correctly during registration to avoid problems while obtaining the fuel token and availing the discounted petrol.
