Islamabad: The federal government has increased the prices of petroleum products and formally introduced a daily fuel price review mechanism, passing on the impact of rising international oil prices to consumers.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs5.44 per litre, raising it from Rs310.71 to Rs316.15 per litre. High-speed diesel has seen a much larger increase of Rs31.05 per litre, taking its price from Rs323.30 to Rs354.35 per litre.
The revised prices came into effect at 12:00 midnight and will remain valid for three days, with the next price review scheduled for July 20.
The government said the new policy aims to pass fluctuations in international oil prices directly to consumers through more frequent price adjustments.
The decision has drawn strong criticism from the All Pakistan Petroleum Pump Owners Association, which rejected the daily pricing mechanism and warned of a nationwide strike if the policy is not withdrawn.
The association said the government introduced the decision without consulting nearly 15,000 petrol pump owners. It argued that the new system would create operational difficulties for petrol pumps, oil tankers, transportation, and fuel pricing.
Vice Chairman Nauman Ali Butt urged the government to reconsider the policy and consult all stakeholders, including oil marketing companies (OMCs) and petrol pump owners, before implementing such decisions. He warned that unilateral policymaking could disrupt the country’s fuel supply chain and pricing system.
