A viral video showing a woman motorcyclist being struck by a car in Gurugram has led to an arrest, with police adding an attempt-to-murder charge as the investigation continues.

Police in India have arrested a man accused of hitting a female motorcyclist with a car in Gurugram, after footage of the incident spread widely online and prompted public concern over road safety.
The incident took place on Sunday on Golf Course Road, where 27-year-old Shivani Chauhan, who uses the name Sia on social media, was riding with a group of motorcyclists. Video recorded during the ride appears to show a white car moving toward her motorcycle before striking it, causing Chauhan to fall onto the road as her bike skidded away.
The car then continued from the scene.
Chauhan later shared footage of the incident on Instagram, where it attracted widespread attention. Gurugram Police subsequently registered a case and began searching for the driver.
Police identified the driver as Kalyan Bainsla, a 33-year-old gym owner from Haryana’s Palwal district. He was arrested in Rajasthan on Tuesday, two days after the incident, along with his cousin, who police said was in the vehicle at the time.
The case was initially registered under provisions relating to rash driving and causing injury. Police later added Section 109 of India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which concerns attempted murder. Authorities said they reached the decision after examining video footage and other evidence.
Gurugram DCP (East) Sandeep Kumar said the victim had told investigators that Bainsla had made inappropriate comments before the collision. Police are also investigating the role of other people who were allegedly in or connected with the vehicle.
Driver disputes allegation of deliberate collision
Bainsla has denied deliberately hitting Chauhan.
In media interviews, he said the collision occurred after members of the motorcycle group repeatedly overtook his car and slowed down in front of it. He claimed he lost control near a U-turn while attempting to avoid Chauhan’s motorcycle.
He also said he left the area because he feared the group would attack him and his relatives.
His lawyer, Naveen Bainsla, has similarly argued that the incident was an accident rather than a deliberate attempt to hit the motorcyclist. The defence has also disputed some of the allegations made by Chauhan.
Chauhan has rejected that account. In videos posted online, she questioned why the driver did not stop after the collision and said the available footage showed how the vehicles moved before the crash.
She has also alleged that the people in the car appeared hostile and that she was targeted because she was a woman riding a motorcycle. Police have not publicly confirmed every allegation made by Chauhan.
Chauhan suffered injuries in the incident but was not seriously hurt. Reports have credited her protective riding equipment with helping prevent more severe injuries.
Wider concerns over women riders
The incident has also prompted discussion on social media about the experiences of women motorcyclists in India.
Several female riders have shared accounts of being followed, challenged by other motorists or subjected to unwanted attention while riding. The Gurugram case has consequently become part of a broader conversation about road behaviour and safety for women riders.
Police have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the actions of other people who were present and the sequence of events immediately before and after the crash. Bainsla is expected to face further legal proceedings as the investigation progresses.
