The federal government has officially established the National Population Council to tackle Pakistan’s rapidly growing population through a coordinated national strategy.
According to an official notification, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair the 16-member council, while Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has been appointed as one of its members. The council also includes the chief ministers of all four provinces, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Federal ministers for Finance, Planning, Health, Education, Law, Information, and Religious Affairs have also been named as members.
The government said the council will formulate a comprehensive population policy, strengthen coordination between federal and provincial governments, and oversee the implementation of national population-related initiatives.
The notification further states that religious scholars, civil society organizations, and the private sector will be actively engaged in nationwide awareness campaigns promoting family planning and responsible population management.
Officials said the council will regularly review progress on population policies and recommend measures to improve cooperation among relevant institutions to address Pakistan’s demographic challenges.
