A wedding celebration in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, turned into a tragedy after a massive fire broke out during the ceremony, killing at least 22 people and injuring several others.
The incident occurred last night while guests were attending the wedding and dancing. The fire suddenly erupted inside the building and quickly spread, prompting guests to rush toward the exits.
According to reports, narrow escape routes caused many people to become trapped, while thick smoke made it difficult for others to breathe and escape.
Firefighters battled the blaze, but flames continued to burn until early Saturday. Rescue workers managed to evacuate several people trapped inside the building, while the bodies of those who died were recovered and taken outside.
Lingwala District Mayor Norbert Mushinga confirmed that the death toll had reached 22 and warned that the number could rise as more bodies are recovered from the debris.
The wedding hall’s interior was completely destroyed. Images from the scene showed burned items, ashes and damaged furniture, while two large windows reportedly shattered due to intense heat.
The mayor also expressed concern over the lack of adequate safety measures, saying an initial inspection indicated that safety regulations had not been properly followed.
