Laptop Fire Erupts Mid-Flight
An American Airlines flight from Atlanta to Dallas experienced a dangerous mid-air incident when a passenger’s laptop battery suddenly caught fire. The event took place on Flight 2398, an Airbus A321 carrying about 133 people, on Friday evening.
What Happened on Board
Around 30 minutes before landing at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the laptop began smoking and then ignited. Thick smoke filled part of the cabin. The pilot immediately radioed air traffic control, reporting a *cabin fire in the back of the airplane* and confirming that flight attendants were working to put it out.
The pilot later told controllers that four to five passengers appeared to have suffered burns from the device. Passengers nearby moved away from the smoke as the laptop’s owner placed the burning device in the aisle.
Crew Response and Safe Landing
Flight attendants acted quickly. They used a special thermal containment bag designed for lithium battery fires and successfully contained the laptop. The fire was brought under control mid-aircraft.
The plane continued its approach and landed safely at DFW. It taxied to the gate under its own power. Emergency personnel and medical teams met the aircraft as standard procedure.
Injuries and Aftermath
One passenger received medical treatment at the airport and was later released. No one required hospitalisation. American Airlines praised the crew for their professionalism and swift action in containing the device.
Growing Concern Over Lithium Batteries
The incident highlights an ongoing safety issue in aviation. Lithium-ion batteries in laptops, phones and power banks can overheat and enter *thermal runaway* causing sudden fires. The US Federal Aviation Administration has recorded dozens of such battery-related incidents on passenger flights this year alone.
Airlines train crews specifically to handle these emergencies, and regulations require larger batteries to stay in the cabin rather than checked luggage so fires can be reached quickly.
