Mickey Arthur is right — and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi needs to hear this more than anyone

Mickey Arthur has said it again. And, as he has said every time before, the people most responsible for the problem will nod politely, schedule a press conference, and then do exactly what they have always done.

Change everything. Again.

The former Pakistan head coach, a man who has worked with Pakistan’s players more intimately than almost any foreign coach in recent memory, has issued another clear and honest diagnosis of what is destroying Pakistani cricket from the inside.

“Chop and change.”

Constant rotation of captains. Constant rotation of coaches. Constant rotation of selectors. Constant rotation of management. And underneath it all, a Pakistan Cricket Board that has changed leadership so frequently that no one inside the system has enough tenure to build anything worth keeping.

Arthur Is Not Saying Anything New

That is the most uncomfortable part of this story.

Mickey Arthur is not breaking news. He is not revealing a secret. He is saying something that every serious cricket observer, every Pakistani fan, and frankly every player who has worn the green shirt in the last decade already knows to be true.

Pakistan’s talent pool is extraordinary. The country produces fast bowlers, batters, and match-winners at a rate that most cricket nations would trade significant resources to replicate. The problem has never been the players.

The problem is the system built around them — or more accurately, the system that is rebuilt around them every six to eighteen months when someone new takes over at the PCB, decides the previous approach was wrong, and starts again from scratch.

The result is a generation of Pakistani cricketers who are simultaneously world class and chronically insecure. Who play international cricket while looking over their shoulders at the selection door. Who cannot commit fully to a collective team vision because the collective team vision changes with every administrative upheaval.

As Arthur has correctly identified, when individual survival takes priority over team success, the team suffers. And Pakistan’s team has been suffering this consequence for years.

The PCB’s Pattern — Documented and Damning

Let us be specific rather than general, because Pakistan cricket deserves honesty more than it deserves diplomacy.

In the last five years alone, Pakistan has had multiple head coaches, multiple chief selectors, multiple captains across formats, and multiple PCB chairmen each arriving with their own philosophy, their own preferred players, and their own vision for how Pakistani cricket should be run.

Coaching changes: Pakistan has rotated through Mickey Arthur himself, Saqlain Mushtaq, Saeed Ajmal, Grant Bradburn, Mohammad Yousuf, and others across various roles in quick succession, with each transition bringing a new coaching philosophy that requires a new adjustment period for the players.

Captaincy changes: Babar Azam has been appointed and removed from captaincy across formats with a frequency that would bewilder any professional athlete trying to build a team culture. Shaheen Shah Afridi was made captain and unmade. Mohammad Rizwan carries the burden of captaincy expectations layered over his wicketkeeping responsibilities in circumstances that would test any player’s concentration.

Selection chaos: Pakistan’s selection panel has changed composition repeatedly, with different selectors bringing different priorities and different preferred players into and out of the setup at a rate that makes any coherent long-term squad building virtually impossible.

A Message for Chairman Mohsin Naqvi

Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has brought energy, media visibility, and personal enthusiasm to the PCB role. He has shown a genuine desire to improve Pakistan cricket’s infrastructure and international standing. Those instincts are positive.

But energy and enthusiasm are not substitutes for institutional stability. And visibility is not the same as strategic patience.

The chairman’s most important job right now is not to announce new initiatives, new partnerships, or new tournaments. His most important job is to stop the chop and change that Mickey Arthur, one of the most credible voices on Pakistan cricket that exists, is warning about publicly and urgently.

Specifically, Chairman Naqvi must commit to the following with his own public accountability on the line.

One. A head coach appointed for a minimum two-year term with a clearly defined mandate and the institutional backing to execute it without interference.

Two. A selection committee with a defined term and the authority to make unpopular decisions without political pressure from board officials, media cycles, or sponsor preferences.

Three. A captain backed consistently across a complete international cycle rather than being appointed and removed in response to a single series result.

Four. A public commitment from the PCB that the next major administrative change will be driven by strategic planning rather than political convenience or sponsor pressure.

Pakistan cricket does not need another vision document. It does not need another press conference announcing a new era. It does not need another consultant, another overseas expert assessment, or another emergency meeting of cricket stakeholders.

It needs two years of boring, consistent, unglamorous stability.

That is Arthur’s message. That is the right message. And it is the message that Pakistan’s cricket administrators have been hearing and ignoring for the better part of a decade.

The Talent Is There — The System Is Failing It

Let us end where Arthur begins. Pakistan has world-class talent. Naseem Shah bowling at full pace is one of the most exciting sights in international cricket. Shaheen Shah Afridi at his best is among the world’s most dangerous left-arm fast bowlers. Babar Azam at his best is a batter of rare elegance and consistency. Mohammad Rizwan is one of the most resilient cricketers in the global game.

These players deserve better than a system that treats them as variables in an administrative experiment rather than human beings building a professional career that requires security, direction, and time.

Mickey Arthur has worked with them. He knows what they are capable of when the environment is right. He is not criticising the players. He is criticising the system that keeps failing them.

The question for Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the PCB Board is simple and direct. How many more times does a credible, experienced, internationally respected voice have to say the same thing before Pakistan cricket actually listens?

Arthur has delivered his message. The rest is on Islamabad.
