The International Journalism Festival 2025 is happening this spring in Perugia, Italy, bringing together journalists, media experts, and supporters from around the world. Organized with strong participation from the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the festival will highlight important topics like media funding, press freedom, AI in journalism, and more.
Global Conversations on Media Funding and Innovation
On April 10, ICFJ President Sharon Moshavi will join a panel titled “From Funding Crisis to Opportunity”. This session will explore new ways to support journalism as traditional funding sources like USAID decrease. The audience will also be invited to share their ideas.
AI’s Influence on Journalism
Also on April 10, Dr. Julie Posetti, ICFJ’s Deputy VP of Research, will discuss how Silicon Valley tech giants and AI technologies are changing journalism. The session “Captured: How Silicon Valley’s AI Emperors Are Reshaping Reality” will look at the global information environment and AI’s growing power.
Rethinking Trust in Journalism
On April 11, Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, Dr. Posetti, and other experts will lead a session titled “Broken Trust”. They’ll talk about the limits of current trust metrics and suggest better ways to measure public trust in news.
Supporting Independent Journalists
The ICFJ will host “Going Independent” on April 11, where independent journalists will share their success stories—how they grew their own media businesses and connected with audiences globally.
Also on April 11 at 4 PM, ICFJ and YouTube will present the News Creator Award to celebrate outstanding independent video journalists who create reliable, impactful content.
Tackling Disinformation and Digital Threats
On April 12, Dr. Posetti will discuss the role of nostalgia in spreading disinformation, based on ICFJ’s latest research. Another important session will highlight ICFJ’s tools to detect and respond to online violence against journalists in real time, led by Nabeelah Shabbir and Kaylee Williams.
