What began as a routine presidential assignment in the Caribbean unexpectedly turned into one of the internet’s most heartwarming love stories after an ABC News producer and a military pilot met while both were working around former U.S. President Joe Biden.
The unusual romance recently gained international attention after The New York Times featured the couple’s wedding story.
Mariam Khan, a field producer for ABC News, was in St. Croix on December 27, 2024, covering Biden’s vacation at the luxurious Buccaneer Resort when fate quietly stepped in.
Sitting alone on the beach after work, Khan noticed a nearby group of men playing a giant version of Connect Four.
Among them was Major Phillip James McCoy, a fighter pilot with the 112th Fighter Squadron of the Ohio Air National Guard, part of a military unit that routinely travels with U.S. presidents for security operations.
According to the New York Times feature, one of McCoy’s friends first approached Khan with an unusual icebreaker.
“He said, ‘Hi, ma’am. Have you seen any shark’s teeth for my kids?’” Khan recalled.
Moments later, McCoy himself walked over and introduced himself after learning she worked for ABC News.

What followed quickly surprised both of them.
The pair soon discovered striking similarities — both were from Ohio, both were middle children, and both shared similar personalities and interests.
“She seemed very approachable,” McCoy told The New York Times. “And I don’t generally like meeting people.”
Their connection eventually blossomed into marriage, with the touching story now drawing widespread attention online after being featured by one of America’s most prestigious newspapers.
Social media users praised the story as a refreshing reminder that unexpected human connections can still emerge even in highly pressured political and security environments.

The viral story has also sparked fascination because of its unique backdrop — a romance born between a journalist covering the president and a pilot assigned to help protect him.
The couple’s wedding photos and full feature were later shared through the Interfaith Marriages organization, where the ceremony officiant celebrated the publication of the story in The New York Times.
In a world dominated by political tension and breaking news, the story offered audiences a rare feel-good moment — proving that sometimes, even while covering power and politics, love quietly finds its way onto the front page.
