In a brief statement, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed that an An-32 military transport plane “met with an accident” while landing at the Jorhat Air Force Station. Authorities said a court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash.
The military did not immediately provide details about casualties or the number of personnel onboard the aircraft at the time of the incident.
Firefighting and rescue operations were launched at the crash site shortly after the accident. Visuals aired by Indian news channel NDTV showed thick black smoke rising from the area, while debris from the aircraft appeared scattered across the site.
According to local media reports, emergency response teams and security personnel quickly cordoned off the area as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
The An-32 is a twin-engine military transport aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force for logistics and personnel transport, particularly in remote and mountainous regions.
The crash comes amid growing concerns over the safety and ageing fleet of military aircraft operated in challenging weather and terrain conditions across India’s northeast region.
