Flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, transmitted emergency signals before diverting to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All passengers were reported safe and accounted for.
Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft making a dramatic descent before the diversion. Reuters reported a drop of nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, while other flight-data reports recorded a similarly sharp loss of altitude.
Passenger accounts reported by Israeli media described a violent struggle in the cockpit, including claims that one pilot was attacked with a knife. These accounts have not been independently verified by Reuters.
The aircraft also reportedly transmitted code 7500, an aviation code associated with unlawful interference, which initially triggered fears of a hijacking and prompted an Israeli military response. However, the Israeli prime minister’s office later said the incident was not believed to have been a hijacking.
So, why would a pilot allegedly try to crash the plane? The motive is currently unknown. Reports of an intentional attempt to crash the aircraft remain an allegation, and investigators have yet to establish what happened inside the cockpit or why the confrontation began.
