Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was found dead beneath the rubble of a building destroyed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon, according to rescue officials and international press freedom advocates.
Khalil had reportedly remained trapped for hours after the strike as emergency teams searched through debris in difficult conditions. Aid workers and rights organizations alleged that rescuers faced delays or obstruction in reaching the site, though those claims could not be independently verified.
The killing triggered condemnation from journalists’ groups, which said Khalil was performing her professional duties in a conflict zone when she lost her life.
Media watchdog organizations called for an independent investigation into the strike, including whether journalists in the area were intentionally targeted and whether first responders were prevented from reaching possible survivors in time.
Khalil’s death adds to the growing number of media workers killed while covering the regional conflict, renewing alarm over the safety of journalists operating in war zones.
The Israeli military had not issued an immediate response to the allegations at the time of publication.
