Ali Hussam Asghar has been elected President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a historic victory but the real test of his leadership begins now not on election night.
The election is over. The celebrations are done. The banners will eventually come down.
Ali Hussam Asghar has won the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry presidency in what can rightly be described as a significant and historic victory. The Vision Alliance’s clean sweep of 13 out of 15 Corporate Class seats sent a message that Lahore’s business community heard and delivered with clarity.
But winning an election is one thing. Making history through performance is another entirely.
MediaBites has closely followed the LCCI election, published independent market reports and analysis throughout the campaign, and the trends highlighted in our reporting ultimately proved accurate. That experience — and the conversations we had with Lahore’s business community throughout this process — gives us a few observations that the new leadership should consider from day one.
Start With Transparency — Especially on Appointments
The new leadership should begin its two-year tenure with one non-negotiable commitment: transparency.
Many people supported the Vision Alliance campaign and invested their time, money and resources in outdoor campaigns, panaflexes, promotional activities and dinners. Their contribution deserves acknowledgement and genuine appreciation.
But the new leadership must also establish a clear principle from the very beginning. Gratitude does not necessarily have to mean appointments or positions.
Ali Hussam Asghar should thank everyone who contributed to the campaign while ensuring that LCCI appointments are based on merit, competence, experience and the needs of the institution. Not on campaign contributions.
That single decision — made publicly and maintained consistently — would send the most important message of the new administration’s first week.
Meet Mian Anjum Nisar — One on One
Whatever the political calculations of this election, Mian Anjum Nisar deserves recognition for his longstanding contribution to the Chamber and for the campaign effort his team led.
The new president should meet Mian Anjum Nisar personally, one on one, and acknowledge his contribution to LCCI.
Leadership is not only about winning. It is also about recognising those who helped build the institution and the environment in which success became possible.
Fix LCCI’s Digital Mess — Immediately
This is one area where Ali Hussam Asghar can make an immediate and visible difference.
LCCI is one of Lahore’s most prestigious institutions. Yet its digital presence is a mess. MediaBites highlighted months ago the problems surrounding multiple Facebook pages, multiple Instagram presences and an underutilised LinkedIn and X presence. The problem has not been resolved.
There should be one clear digital strategy. One authoritative social media identity. One professional editorial team responsible for the website and social platforms.
LCCI should be communicating with its members and the wider business community every single day — not simply posting photographs from events.
A modern chamber needs a modern digital newsroom.
Fewer Events. Better Outcomes.
The previous leadership organised numerous events and signed a large number of MOUs. Events have their place. MOUs can also be useful.
But an MOU should not become the final achievement.
The new leadership should ask one simple question before signing every agreement. What measurable outcome will this MOU produce for LCCI members?
Instead of dozens of ceremonial agreements, LCCI should focus on fewer strategic partnerships with clearly defined targets, timelines and measurable results. Quality must replace quantity.
Stop Collecting Problems. Start Solving Them.
One issue repeatedly emerged during interactions with Lahore’s business community throughout this election campaign. Members have genuine and persistent problems dealing with institutions such as LESCO, FBR and other government departments.
LCCI should create a structured mechanism to document, categorise and resolve these complaints — collecting grievances from members, identifying recurring problems, preparing formal reports, engaging the relevant authorities and tracking cases until resolution.
This would transform LCCI from a platform that discusses business problems into an institution that actively solves them.
No More Photo Sessions Without Results
The new administration should also reconsider the traditional approach to official events.
When LCCI invites members, entrepreneurs, experts or government representatives to an event, senior leadership should ensure meaningful representation throughout — not just an opening speech before rushing to the next function.
Businesspeople also have busy schedules. They leave their offices, their businesses and their families to attend LCCI events. Their time deserves the same respect.
Publish a 30-Day Action Plan
Perhaps the most important recommendation of all.
The new leadership should publish its first 30-day action plan within the first week of taking office. The business community should know what Ali Hussam Asghar and his team intend to accomplish during the first month, the first six months and the full two-year tenure.
The plan should include digital restructuring, a business complaint mechanism, LESCO and FBR engagement strategy, review of existing MOUs, member services improvement, a special privilege card and quarterly performance reporting.
At the end of each quarter LCCI should be able to tell its members what was promised, what was achieved and what remains pending. That is how institutional credibility is built.
The Verdict
LCCI does not need another administration remembered primarily for dinners, photographs, ceremonies and signed MOUs.
It needs leadership that can listen, document, negotiate, solve and deliver.
The election victory has already been recorded in history. The next two years will determine what is written next to Ali Hussam Asghar’s name.
MediaBites congratulates Ali Hussam Asghar and the new leadership of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on their victory. The campaign is over. The real test begins today.
