Egypt made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4 to 2 in a penalty shootout following a 1 to 1 draw after extra time. Emam Ashour gave the Egyptians an early lead with a header in the 13th minute, but Australia drew level in the second half when Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net under pressure. Both sides created chances in a tense contest, but neither could find a winner over 120 minutes. In the shootout, Mohamed Salah calmly converted his penalty before Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory with the decisive kick after Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed for Australia. Egypt will now face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
