Defending champions Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to secure their place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals after a dramatic quarterfinal in Kansas City.
Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead in the first half, but Dan Ndoye equalized after the break to send the match into extra time.
Switzerland looked the stronger side for much of the game until a red card for Breel Embolo changed the contest. Reduced to 10 men, the Swiss defended bravely and appeared close to taking the match to a penalty shootout.
However, Argentina finally broke through in extra time. Julian Alvarez scored to put the defending champions ahead before Lautaro Martinez added another goal to seal a 3-1 victory and send Argentina into the last four.
The win continues Argentina’s impressive title defense after their dramatic comeback against Egypt in the Round of 16. They will now move one step closer to retaining the World Cup trophy.
For Switzerland, it was another heartbreaking exit at the quarterfinal stage, despite a spirited performance against one of the tournament favorites.
