The United Kingdom has deployed three of its four nuclear deterrent submarines at sea simultaneously for the first time in five years. At least one of the submarines is equipped with ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, according to British media reports.
The report identified the three submarines as HMS Vanguard, HMS Vigilant and HMS Vengeance. The fourth submarine, HMS Victorious, is currently undergoing maintenance.
As a security measure, the UK normally maintains a continuous at-sea presence of at least one of its four submarines to ensure its nuclear deterrent remains operational.
The unusual deployment has raised questions about whether Britain has changed its defence posture following a recent warning by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting that the country must be prepared for war.
The independent Royal Navy monitoring organisation Navy Lookout says that at least one ballistic missile submarine has remained continuously at sea without interruption since 1969.
According to Sky News, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the country’s nuclear deterrent was “the cornerstone of our national security, protecting the UK and our NATO allies every day, at every moment.”
The spokesperson added that Britain was the only European ally to assign its nuclear deterrent to the defence of NATO. This means all NATO allies already benefit from the protection provided by Britain’s nuclear deterrent, the spokesperson said.
The development comes after British and French fighter jets conducted their first joint exercise last week involving France’s airborne nuclear capabilities.
According to the French Armed Forces, British RAF Typhoon fighter jets provided an escort for French aircraft and participated in a simulated nuclear strike exercise.
On Saturday, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting wrote in The Telegraph that Britain should be ready for war within 1,000 days.
“Our adversaries’ intent to harm us is nothing new. What has changed is their capability,” Streeting wrote. “By 2030, their military power and war economies could put them in a position to attack.”
He added that the situation gave Britain slightly more than 1,000 days to complete its mission and prepare to fight and win alongside its allies. The government, he said, would ensure that the mission was accomplished.
The defence secretary’s warning followed the launch of the government’s “Be Ready” campaign, which urges the public to prepare for emergencies that could disrupt essential infrastructure, including cyberattacks and severe weather.
Under the campaign, households are advised to keep a three-day supply of essential items, including food, bottled water, cash and a radio, to help them cope with potential disruptions.
