WEBDESK: A 13-year-old Emirati boy lost his life while saving his younger sister and two cousins from strong sea currents at a beach in Ras Al Khaimah, in what authorities and family members described as a heroic but heartbreaking incident.
The boy, identified as Mohammed Ahmed bin Amer Al Shehhi, had visited the beach with his extended family on April 14 when the tragedy unfolded.
According to his father, the children were playing near the shore when sudden waves and powerful currents pulled them into deeper water. Mohammed, who had earlier stepped away after sensing danger, rushed back into the sea when he saw his seven-year-old sister and two cousins struggling.
A heroic rescue
Family members said Mohammed successfully pulled his younger sister to safety, preventing her from drowning. She was later found unconscious after swallowing seawater but was revived and has since been discharged from the hospital.
However, during the rescue effort, Mohammed became exhausted after ingesting large amounts of seawater and was unable to make it back to shore.
Rescue teams reached the scene shortly after being alerted, but despite showing faint signs of life, the teenager passed away before he could be transported to hospital.
‘He was like an elder brother to everyone’
Mohammed’s father described him as a caring and responsible boy who was deeply protective of his siblings.
“He was like an elder brother to everyone, always taking care of them,” he said, adding that the family is devastated by the loss.
His younger sister, who survived the incident, is said to be emotionally affected and struggling with guilt over the tragedy.
Call for safety measures
The grieving father has urged authorities to enhance safety measures at the beach, including better warnings and protective systems to prevent similar incidents.
All three children rescued by Mohammed survived — a testament to his courage, even as his own life was tragically cut short.
