Two members of Iran’s women’s football team have been granted Australian citizenship in one of the most politically charged asylum stories of 2026 — a journey that began with a silent protest during a national anthem, passed through a Trump phone call to the Australian Prime Minister, and ended at a Brisbane citizenship ceremony.
Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh confirmed in a joint statement Thursday that Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke swore them in the previous day at a citizenship ceremony in Brisbane — the city they now call home.
The Story That Started With a Silence
The Iranian women’s team had arrived in Australia before the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February 2026. When players declined to sing the Iranian national anthem before their first match of the tournament, the gesture sent an immediate and unmistakable signal.
Concerns for the team’s welfare upon returning to Iran intensified when Iranian sports commentator Mohammad Reza Shahbazi called the women “wartime traitors” on national television — a label that carries deeply serious implications in the context of a country at war.
Seven Iranian players initially accepted asylum. Five subsequently changed their minds within days and returned to the team — for reasons they have not disclosed publicly.
Two stayed. They are now Australian citizens.
Trump Called. Albanese Listened.
The scale of public attention on the asylum question drew the attention of the highest political offices. US President Donald Trump used social media to call for the Iranian players to be granted asylum and personally telephoned Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the matter.
The outcome — citizenship for two players — arrived within months of that political pressure.
What Awaits Them at Home
For the five who returned to Iran, the consequences of their brief asylum acceptance in a country that subsequently granted citizenship to two teammates remain unclear. In Iran’s current wartime climate, their position is deeply uncertain.
For Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh, Brisbane is now home.
