US President Donald Trump expressed surprise on Monday, September 28, after British police released five men on bail who were arrested over an alleged terrorist plot targeting a UK airbase used by American forces.
The suspects were arrested early Sunday near Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwest England. The military base has been used by US bombers for operations against Iran since March.
The five men, all British nationals in their twenties from London, were detained on suspicion of explosives offenses and preparing a terrorist act. Police began investigating after reports of three suspicious white vans near the base.
British counter-terrorism police confirmed on Monday that the suspects had been released on bail following extensive interviews and investigations. Authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that the men are subject to strict bail conditions.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he was surprised by the decision to release the suspects. He added that British authorities had worked closely with the United States and claimed American officials knew about the men.
When asked whether Iran could be connected to the alleged plot, Trump replied that it might be involved but declined to provide further details.
British authorities are investigating whether a foreign state may have been involved in the suspected plot. Counter-terrorism officials said they were examining whether individuals acted independently or on behalf of a foreign government.
Iran has denied any involvement in the incident, rejecting allegations linking Tehran to the suspected plot.
The investigation continues as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the arrests and assess potential security threats to military installations used by US forces in Britain.
