Deadly floods triggered by days of torrential rain in southwestern China have killed at least nine people, displaced thousands, and left 11 others missing as rescue teams battle worsening conditions in Chongqing.

At least nine people have died, and 11 others remain missing after severe flooding and landslides struck Chongqing following days of intense rainfall, Chinese state media reported on Monday.
The disaster mainly affected Yongchuan district, where heavy overnight rain on Saturday caused rivers to overflow, triggering flash floods and mudslides that swept through villages and residential areas.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, the death toll rose after rescue workers recovered more bodies from devastated areas. Authorities had initially confirmed three deaths on Sunday before the number increased during ongoing rescue operations.
Xinhua News Agency reported that more than 2,000 residents have been evacuated from high-risk zones as emergency teams continue searching for missing people.
Floodwaters damaged roads, homes, and public infrastructure across the mountainous district, while unstable terrain and continuing rainfall have complicated rescue efforts. Emergency crews equipped with heavy machinery are working around the clock to locate survivors and clear debris.
The flooding in Chongqing follows a week of extreme weather across central and southwestern China, where storms and heavy rain have already caused multiple deaths and forced large-scale evacuations in several provinces.
Chinese authorities have issued fresh warnings for additional heavy rainfall and possible geological disasters, including landslides and flash floods, as the country enters its annual flood season.
Officials urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
