Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner as Spain defeated Belgium 2-1 to book their place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals.
The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Merino, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, reacted quickest to a rebound after Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens spilled a powerful shot from Pau Cubarsi. The Arsenal midfielder scored with just his second touch of the match to send Spain into the final four.
It was the second straight knockout game in which Merino played the hero. He also scored the winning goal in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the last 16.
Spain had taken the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved an effort from Dani Olmo, but Ruiz was in the right place to convert the rebound and put Spain ahead.
Belgium responded before halftime when Charles De Ketelaere headed home from Timothy Castagne’s cross in the 41st minute. The goal ended Spain’s remarkable 6 games streak without conceding a goal at the World Cup.
Belgium suffered a setback when Courtois was forced off with an apparent thigh injury in the 71st minute, with Senne Lammens replacing him in goal.
Despite a strong late push from Belgium, Spain held on to secure victory. They will now face France in a highly anticipated semifinal clash in Dallas as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
