Takaichi defeated Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in a runoff election, winning 185 votes to Koizumi’s 156. The leadership race had five candidates, but none secured a majority in the first round. In the final tally, Takaichi gained 149 votes from lawmakers and 36 from local LDP chapters. Koizumi received 145 lawmaker votes and 11 from prefectural chapters.
The 63-year-old former economic security minister has long been seen as a strong conservative voice within the LDP. Her victory reflects both her persistence — this was her third attempt to win the party leadership — and growing support for female leadership in Japan.
Becoming Japan first female prime minister is a significant milestone for a nation where women’s representation in politics has been limited. Takaichi has promised to focus on strengthening Japan’s economy, improving national security, and supporting innovation and digital growth.
