The federal government of Pakistan has declared Monday, November 9, a nationwide public holiday to mark the birth anniversary of national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The Cabinet Division has issued an official notification confirming the holiday, under which federal government offices and institutions will remain closed across the country.
The announcement means that November 9 will be observed as Iqbal Day, an annual occasion commemorating Iqbal’s birth. His poetry and political ideas are widely associated with the intellectual foundations of the Pakistan Movement. The day provides an opportunity to remember his contribution and reflect on the themes of self-respect, identity and national awareness found in his work.
According to the notification reported by The Current, the holiday will also provide a three-day break to employees and students whose regular weekly holidays fall on Saturday and Sunday. The additional day off will extend the weekend for people following that schedule.
Educational institutions in Sindh have also been included in the holiday arrangements. The province’s College Education Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions in Sindh will remain closed on November 9. The announcement specifically relates to educational institutions across the province.
The banking sector will also observe the holiday. The State Bank of Pakistan has confirmed that banks across the country will remain closed on the occasion. In a circular sent to commercial banks, microfinance banks and development finance institutions, the central bank stated that banking premises dealing with public transactions would not operate that day.
The announcement therefore affects federal government offices and institutions, banks nationwide, and public and private educational institutions in Sindh. People planning official, educational or banking work for Monday should take the closures into account and complete any necessary arrangements beforehand.
Iqbal Day is observed every year on November 9 in memory of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. This year, the date falls on a Monday, and the government’s notification confirms the nationwide public holiday. The separate announcements by the Sindh College Education Department and the State Bank clarify the arrangements for educational institutions in Sindh and banking services throughout Pakistan.
