Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that discussions regarding Pakistan’s mineral resources are still at an initial stage and that no contract or mine has been handed over to the United States.
Khawaja Asif said that those opposing governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wanted to have a role in the existing setup.
He stated that the world knows Pakistan possesses valuable mineral resources, attracting interest from Canada, China, Australia and the United States. Pakistan will work with whichever country it considers a reliable partner, he added.
The defence minister said Pakistan cannot extract these mineral resources without foreign investment.
Regarding the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khawaja Asif alleged that the provincial government had not cooperated with the federal government in the fight against terrorism. He said the previous provincial government had failed to act against terrorist hideouts despite being aware of their locations.
According to Asif, the provincial government’s silence had contributed to a significant increase in terrorism, with more lives lost in terrorist attacks over the past year and a half.
He stressed that unity was needed in the fight against terrorism and said an active provincial government would now play its role in restoring peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He added that the primary objective would be to rid the province of terrorism.
Asif further explained that intelligence-based operations alone could not deliver lasting results unless the provincial government established its writ in the affected areas. He said the provincial government would now play an active role in maintaining law and order following security operations.
The defence minister said governor’s rule had not been planned from the outset. However, he maintained that all other options had been exhausted, leaving it as the last resort.
“ If things cannot be achieved through straightforward means, then tougher measures have to be taken,” he remarked.
