Sara Gore, a longtime television personality with NBC New York, shared the emotional news during a live broadcast Thursday, telling viewers she would temporarily step down from her roles on New York Live and Open House to focus on her health.
“If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying,” Gore said on air, her voice breaking as she addressed her audience.
The veteran host, who has been with NBC New York for 16 years, described the diagnosis as both shocking and deeply personal, especially given her family history. She revealed that both her mother and sister have also battled breast cancer, adding that she had long considered herself at high risk.
Despite that awareness, Gore said the moment still came as an emotional blow.
“You are never ready,” she said, explaining that the diagnosis felt sudden even though she had taken preventive measures and remained vigilant about her health.
Gore told viewers she will undergo treatment and surgery in the coming weeks, expressing gratitude for the medical professionals supporting her and the strong network of family and colleagues around her.
“I feel loved. I feel very supported,” she said, adding that she is trying to find meaning in the experience despite its difficulty.
NBC New York publicly voiced support for the host, saying the entire newsroom is wishing her a speedy recovery.
Gore, who was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2020 for co-hosting Open House, is also known for her work expanding New York Live into primetime programming covering entertainment, lifestyle, and culture.
She shares three children with her husband, filmmaker Matthew Miele, and has been a familiar face to New York audiences for more than a decade.
Her announcement drew an outpouring of support from viewers and colleagues, underscoring her impact as both a broadcaster and a trusted on-air personality.
