Pakistan has introduced a major digital step to streamline birth registration, as the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) launches a new Birth Notification Tool designed to make the process faster, easier, and more efficient.
Under the new system, parents will automatically receive an SMS notification immediately after the birth of a child, initiating the legal identity registration process from day one.
According to NADRA, the system has been developed in collaboration with public and private hospitals across the country. Once a birth is recorded at a participating healthcare facility, a notification is instantly sent to the registered mobile number of the parents. The message serves not only as an alert but also as an initial birth record.
NADRA spokesperson Syed Shahabat Ali said the initiative aims to bring Pakistan’s civil registration system in line with international standards, where identity documentation begins at birth. He noted that delays in early registration have long been a challenge, which the new digital solution seeks to address.
Officials said the tool will also simplify the birth registration process at Union Councils. Obtaining a birth certificate from the Union Council remains the first mandatory step and serves as the foundation for all future official documentation.
Parents can complete the registration process using the child’s identity record, hospital documentation, or the SMS notification sent by NADRA.
The service has already been activated through the Pak Identity mobile application in Punjab and Sindh, while expansion in Balochistan is underway. Implementation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will begin after the required approvals are granted.
