NADRA has introduced a new locally made QR code-based national identity card in Pakistan, replacing the imported microchip. The new card can be verified through smartphones and the Pak ID mobile app.

Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new locally produced national identity card, replacing the imported microchip with a secure QR code.
The new identity card is made from polycarbonate material and features a QR code containing the cardholder’s relevant identification information and photograph. The QR code can be verified using a regular smartphone and the Pak ID mobile app.
The new card will also include the family number and special markings for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, organ donors and citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Names and addresses will be printed in both Urdu and English.
According to NADRA, the new QR-code-based card is being introduced in phases. From January 2027, it will also be issued for NICOP, Juvenile Cards and other categories of national identity documents.
Previously issued identity cards will remain valid until their stated expiry dates.
