Pakistan’s most watched banking appointment has finally been made. And in true Pakistani institutional style, the answer was not the name that everyone expected.

The Government of Pakistan’s Finance Division has appointed Imran Sarwar as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Pakistan for a period of three years with immediate effect, subject to Fit and Proper Test clearance by the State Bank of Pakistan.

NBP disclosed the development in a filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday, citing Finance Division Notification No. F.No.1(9) Bkg-III/2022-696 dated September 3, 2026.

The Plot Twist — Zafar Masud Steps Back

MediaBites has been tracking this appointment from the beginning. Nine candidates interviewed. Three shortlisted. One name — Zafar Masud — circulating so consistently that his appointment seemed a matter of when, not if.

Then the black horse Abdul Wahid Sethi was appointed Acting President. And now Imran Sarwar has emerged as the permanent appointment.

Sources close to the development confirm what has now become clear. Zafar Masud, who was widely considered the frontrunner and had the strongest banking credentials of the shortlisted candidates, ultimately withdrew his name from consideration.

The reason, according to sources, goes to the heart of Punjab’s political calculations. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the Punjab government did not want Masud to leave the Bank of Punjab, where he has overseen a historic transformation including record profits, a doubling of deposits, and Pakistan’s most comprehensive digital banking achievement. Punjab wanted him where he is. And Masud, reportedly content in a position where his achievements are visible, his record is strong, and his institutional support is solid, accepted that reality.

The position went to Imran Sarwar.

Who Is Imran Sarwar?

Imran Sarwar brings a credentials profile that is both internationally diverse and domestically grounded — precisely the combination a bank of NBP’s scale and complexity requires.

He holds a degree in Business and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University in the United States and an LLB from the University of the Punjab — a combination of American business education and Pakistani legal grounding that gives him a distinctive foundation in analysis and governance.

His professional experience spans over 27 years of diversified banking across Corporate, Institutional, Investment Banking and Risk — and critically, across four countries. He has worked in Pakistan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the UAE, giving him international exposure that most Pakistani banking executives do not possess at equivalent career stages.

Sources also confirm that Imran Sarwar is the brother of a Lahore High Court judge, a connection that speaks to a family with deep roots in Pakistan’s legal and institutional establishment.

His appointment brings to NBP a leader with the international perspective, risk management depth, and institutional banking credentials that sustaining the bank’s record performance demands.

The Bank He Inherits

NBP is one of Pakistan’s largest commercial banks with 1,503 branches, 15,000 plus employees, and a PKR 7.1 trillion balance sheet. The bank delivered a resilient performance in the first half of 2026, posting:

• Profit before tax: Rs 67.3 billion
• Profit after tax: Rs 32.4 billion
• Earnings per share: Rs 15.23 for the half-year ended June 30, 2026

These are strong numbers. Sustaining and building on them will be Imran Sarwar’s first and most immediate challenge.

He also inherits the cultural transformation challenge that MediaBites identified in our earlier op-ed as NBP’s most difficult and most consequential task — moving the bank’s service culture from the complacency of guaranteed government employment to the accountability-driven excellence that Pakistan’s banking customers deserve.
