Kasur Family Tragedy: Five Members Die Within 72 Hours After Allegedly Consuming Contaminated Kheer
A heartbreaking incident in Kasur district has claimed the lives of five members of the same family, including a mother, father and their three sons, within approximately 72 hours after they allegedly consumed contaminated homemade kheer. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about food safety and the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance in suspected poisoning cases.
The incident occurred in Khanke, a settlement near Kanganpur in Chunian Tehsil of Kasur district. According to media reports, the following affected family included 55-year-old Qasim Ali, his wife Hasna Bibi, and their three sons, identified as 28-year-old Asif Ali, 25-year-old Nazim Ali and 15-year-old Amanat Ali.
Initial reports suggest that a lizard may have fallen into a bowl of homemade kheer prepared for the family. The animal was reportedly removed before the dessert was served. However, shortly after consuming the food, family members began experiencing severe abdominal pain, vomiting and other symptoms associated with possible food poisoning.
As their condition deteriorated, the family members were initially taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Chunian. They were subsequently referred to Lahore General Hospital for further medical treatment as their condition became critical.
Nazim Ali reportedly became the first victim to die during treatment. His two brothers, Asif Ali and Amanat Ali, subsequently succumbed to their condition. Their father, Qasim Ali, and mother, Hasna Bibi, were also reported to have died, bringing the total death toll to five, according to subsequent reports.
The suspected involvement of a lizard in the incident has become a major focus of public discussion. However, authorities have not yet established whether the reptile was responsible for contaminating the food or whether another toxic substance caused the deaths.
According to Dawn, samples of the remaining kheer were sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Authority for laboratory examination. Police have launched an investigation to determine the actual cause of the tragedy.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan has also taken notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the Kasur deputy commissioner, directing authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The tragedy has left the local community grieving the loss of an entire family. Beyond the heartbreaking circumstances, the incident highlights the importance of food hygiene, timely medical intervention and scientific investigation.
Until forensic findings establish the cause, the suspected lizard contamination remains an unconfirmed explanation.
