Netflix is developing a live-action television series based on the popular battle royale video game PUBG, with Emmy-winning actor Donald Glover set to star, direct and write the adaptation.
South Korean gaming company Krafton confirmed the project on October 30, announcing that Glover will also serve as an executive producer alongside his brother, Stephen Glover, who will join the production as a writer and executive producer.
The series will be based on PUBG, originally known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which became one of the world’s most recognised battle royale games following its release in 2017. The game features up to 100 players competing on a battlefield, collecting weapons and resources while attempting to become the last surviving player.
Donald Glover is widely recognised for creating and starring in the television series Atlanta, which earned him Emmy and Golden Globe awards. He has also appeared in the comedy series Community and co-created and starred in Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
His involvement brings experience in acting, directing, writing and television production to the gaming adaptation. His brother, Stephen Glover, has previously collaborated with him on several projects, including Atlanta.
Krafton’s entertainment subsidiary, LV3H, will participate in the development and production of the series. Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee will serve as executive producers representing the company.
Other executive producers include Michael Schaefer of NEON TV and Fam Udeorji of Gilga, bringing together representatives from the gaming company and entertainment industry.
The adaptation presents a creative challenge because PUBG does not follow a traditional storyline. Instead, its central concept revolves around survival, competition and players fighting to remain the last person standing. The television adaptation will need to develop characters and a narrative that can engage viewers beyond the original gaming experience.
The announcement is part of Krafton’s broader efforts to expand the PUBG franchise beyond gaming into television and other entertainment formats.
However, Netflix and Krafton have not yet announced the series’ plot, additional cast members, production schedule or release date. Further details are expected to be shared at a later stage.
