FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, despite ongoing regional tensions and stricter US entry rules for Iranian nationals.

Speaking at a forum in Washington on April 15, Infantino put speculation to rest, stating that Iran is “coming for sure,” signaling that participation plans remain unchanged.

Matches in the United States

Iran, which qualified in March 2025, is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in the US, including two fixtures in Inglewood, California, and one in Seattle.

FIFA has rejected requests to shift Iran’s matches to Mexico, keeping the original venue plan intact across host nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Travel restrictions raise concerns

The confirmation comes amid tightened US travel restrictions, which include Iran among several countries facing entry limitations.

While exemptions will apply to players, officials, and team staff, Iranian fans may be unable to attend matches in the United States under current visa policies.

Additional measures, including visa bond requirements ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 for some visitors, could further limit attendance.

A tournament of global scale

The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, with the United States hosting the majority of games.

The final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, in the New York–New Jersey area, concluding a six-week global sporting event expected to generate billions in economic activity.
