Officials of the Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority have uncovered an alleged illegal kidney transplant network operating through a private hospital in Punjab, raising serious concerns about healthcare oversight and organ trafficking in the province.
According to authorities, a woman allegedly paid nearly Rs5 million for a kidney transplant that later failed, leaving her in critical condition. She is currently receiving treatment at Lahore’s Services Hospital.
Investigators revealed that a labourer was allegedly paid only Rs350,000 in exchange for his kidney, while a clinic doctor is accused of serving as a middleman by linking financially vulnerable donors with desperate patients seeking transplants.
Officials said the raid exposed an organised network allegedly involved in unlawful organ transplantation procedures carried out for huge profits without proper legal approvals and medical safeguards.
The disturbing case has once again highlighted the growing menace of illegal organ trafficking in Pakistan, where poverty, unemployment, and weak enforcement mechanisms continue to make vulnerable citizens easy targets for exploitation.
Critics argue that such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent despite the government granting expanded powers to the Crime Control Department (CCD) to tackle organised crime and mafias across Punjab.
“Respected CM Punjab, why are crime-related incidents increasing day by day in Punjab despite giving full authority to the CCD?” critics questioned, adding that most ministers appear focused mainly on Lahore while smaller districts continue to suffer from weak governance, poor law enforcement, and rising criminal activity.
The Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority has launched a comprehensive inquiry into the case, and officials say more arrests are expected as investigations continue into the alleged transplant racket.
