The federal government has decided to export 108,000 metric tons of sugar that was previously imported into Pakistan. Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain said the decision would not increase sugar prices in the domestic market, citing sufficient stocks across the country.
He said improving global sugar prices had prompted the government to export the available stock at better rates.
Meanwhile, Awam Pakistan Party leader Miftah Ismail strongly criticized the government’s sugar policy, arguing that sugar was first exported, creating an artificial shortage, followed by excessive imports.
He questioned the decision to export the same imported sugar, saying the financial burden ultimately falls on ordinary Pakistanis.
