Argentina 3-0 Algeria
Lionel Messi marked his record sixth World Cup appearance in spectacular fashion, scoring the first World Cup hat-trick of his career as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 in their Group J opener. The defending champions dominated the contest, with Messi opening the scoring after an earlier effort was ruled out for offside. He added a second from close range before completing his hat-trick with a trademark strike from outside the box. The treble took Messi level with Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest scorer in World Cup history on 16 goals, giving Argentina the perfect start to their title defence.
Norway 4-1 Iraq
Erling Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut as Norway marked their return to the tournament after 28 years with a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq in Group I. Haaland opened the scoring before Aymen Hussein headed Iraq level, but the Manchester City striker restored Norway’s lead before halftime after capitalising on a defensive error. Substitute Leo Ostigard added a third in the second half, while a late Hussein own goal completed the scoring. The win puts Norway level on points with France and boosts hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
France 3-1 Senegal
Kylian Mbappe became France’s all-time leading goalscorer as he scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their World Cup opener. After a closely contested first half in which Senegal created the better chances, Bradley Barcola broke the deadlock before Mbappe added a second. Ibrahim Mbaye briefly gave Senegal hope by reducing the deficit, but Mbappe sealed the win with a stunning long-range strike in stoppage time. The Real Madrid forward’s 58th international goal moved him past former record holder Olivier Giroud and ensured a winning start for Les Bleus.
