At a high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) at the UN headquarters, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram praised China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI) as a clear framework for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide. Ambassador Akram highlighted China’s contributions, including institutionalized cooperation, project development funding, and consultative mechanisms necessary for achieving the SDGs.
Ambassador Akram noted China’s success in lifting over 700 million people out of poverty and expressed confidence that the country’s experiences and support could aid other developing nations in their poverty reduction and development goals. The ambassador emphasized the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a key example of how cooperation with China helped Pakistan overcome energy and infrastructure deficits.
He also stressed the importance of financing and project development in the journey towards sustainable development. Ambassador Akram called for global commitments, including the Secretary-General’s $500 billion stimulus proposal, ODA fulfillment, and climate finance scaling, to ensure meaningful progress in achieving the SDGs.
Representatives from member countries, UN agencies, and other stakeholders gathered at the meeting to engage in meaningful discussions about the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and its role in advancing global development. The participants explored ways in which the GDI could be leveraged to foster international cooperation, enhance project development, and secure the necessary financing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ambassador Munir Akram emphasized Pakistan’s strong commitment to working closely with China and other members of the Group of Friends to promote the successful implementation of the SDGs. He highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration and partnerships to address pressing global challenges, such as poverty, climate change, and inequality.
The meeting served as a platform for exchanging ideas and identifying opportunities for strengthening cooperation among the participating countries and organizations. Attendees discussed strategies for mobilizing resources and aligning efforts to achieve common development goals.
