The worst happened in the past 24 hours and at least 15 people were killed and 1,406 were injured in 1,280 road accidents across all districts of Punjab. The statistics provided by the emergency services of the province show 638 patients with major injuries were taken to different hospitals and 768 patients with minor injuries were attended at the scene by the rescue medical teams.
The data revealed that 767 drivers, 60 underage drivers, 147 pedestrians, and 507 passengers were among the casualties. This data shows a troubling trend in the Lahore region, where 283 accidents have been reported, and shows Lahore’s importance of road safety measures.
Road safety experts assert that such measures as more road safety campaigns, higher penalties for traffic violations, and better planning of infrastructure construction could greatly decrease the number of traffic accidents.
Besides, regulation of current traffic laws should be done and driving monitoring mechanisms to identify and impose penalties on underage and reckless drivers are required as well. Better transport alternatives and walkable environment are also crucial in order to protect vulnerable road users.
Road safety authorities and provincial government should be in partnership so as to devise and implement detailed programs targeting road crashes and security for all road users. The public cooperation and obeying to the traffic rules are just as significant as the reduction of the risks related to road travel.
