Bushra Bibi, wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan, has been acquitted in 12 cases linked to the violent events of May 9, 2023.
Judge Malik Ijaz Asif at the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, listened to Bushra Bibi’s appeal regarding the cases. After examining the evidence and arguments, the court granted her request for acquittal.
Bushra Bibi was implicated in 12 cases filed in Rawalpindi for the violent events on May 9, including allegations involving assaults on the army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) and other sensitive facilities. The police tried to call the accused for physical remand, but the court denied the request and released Bushra Bibi from all 12 cases.
This decision represents a major advancement in the legal process after the events of May 9, and the exoneration of Bushra Bibi is anticipated to impact the continuing investigations extensively.
The Rawalpindi Police finished the first part of their investigation into Bushra Bibi’s alleged role in the May 9 incidents on August 15. The examination was conducted with SP Faisal Saleem overseeing it, as the team visited Adiala Jail where Bushra Bibi is currently held.
Sources say that Bushra Bibi was interrogated by the police team for a half-hour. The questioning occurred with DSP Shazia present and revolved around her supposed involvement in arranging demonstrations that resulted in arson and other acts of violence in Rawalpindi. The researchers aimed to find out about the organization and implementation of these demonstrations, particularly those that took place in front of important sites.
The ATC had dismissed Bushra Bibi’s temporary bail requests for 12 cases from May 9, 2023 just a day before. Judge Malik Ijaz Asif, presiding over the court, directed the police to finish their investigation of these cases within a week.
The court rejected Bushra Bibi’s bail applications during the hearing held at Adiala Jail, highlighting the importance of probing the multiple charges against her. The court noted that an investigation is required when a suspect is arrested in numerous cases, and postponed the hearing for all related cases until August 22.
The legal proceedings following the May 9 cases, which consist of more than 500 suspected individuals, have been substantial. All 500 suspects were accounted for. Many notable personalities such as Imran Khan, Sheikh Rashid, Shibli Faraz, Ghulam Sarwar, Sadaqat Abbasi, Shireen Mazari, and Azam Swati attended the hearing at the specially set up courtroom in Adiala Jail.
Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, also appeared in the court set up in Adiala Jail. The incidents originated from the unfortunate events on May 9, causing widespread turmoil and resulting in a sequence of arrests and legal proceedings.
