Breaking: Javed Chaudhry joins Samaa TV — the anchor behind 18 years of Kal Tak ends nine-month absence with weekend prime time show alongside Sattar Khan

Imran MalikBy 49 Comments3 Mins Read

Senior anchor Javed Chaudhry has joined Samaa TV and will host a weekend show in the 11 PM slot alongside investigation journalist Sattar Khan, ending nine months without a television home.

By Imran Malik | Media Industry Desk | MediaBites.com.pk

It is official. One of Pakistan’s most recognized television faces is back on screen.

Javed Chaudhry, whose extraordinary 18-year run hosting Kal Tak on Express News made him one of the most-watched anchors in Pakistani television history, has joined Samaa TV and will host a weekend show in the 11 PM to midnight slot alongside senior investigative journalist Sattar Khan.

The announcement ends nine months without a television home for Chaudhry — the longest gap in 18 years of uninterrupted broadcasting.

The Return Pakistan Was Waiting For

Kal Tak was not simply a television show. For 18 consecutive years on Express News, it was a fixture of Pakistani prime time and one of the longest-running political analysis programs in the country’s television history.

His departure from Express News triggered nine months of complete absence. No channel. No platform. No prime time slot. For an anchor whose face had appeared on Pakistani screens almost every weeknight for nearly two decades, that silence was both striking and telling.

No major Pakistani news channel moved to accommodate him during those nine months. That period ends now with Samaa TV.

Sattar Khan — Investigation Expert Gets National Platform

Joining Chaudhry in the weekend slot is Sattar Khan, a senior journalist with strong investigative credentials. Khan had been anchoring for a regional Punjabi-language channel that never achieved significant national recognition.

His addition brings investigative expertise alongside Chaudhry’s strengths in political analysis — a combination that could give the weekend program a genuinely distinctive identity in Samaa’s lineup.

Aleem Khan’s Samaa — The Channel With a Soft Corner for Struggling Journalists

Aleem Khan, Chairman of Samaa TV and currently a federal minister, has developed a recognizable and frequently discussed pattern. Samaa has become the destination for senior anchors and journalists who find themselves without platforms at other channels.

Media analysts note that several recent Samaa acquisitions have involved names whose ratings had declined significantly elsewhere. Whatever the humanitarian merit of this approach, it creates consistent pressure on Samaa’s sales teams, who must sell advertising against shows other channels declined to carry.

As a politician with media ownership, Aleem Khan faces acknowledged pressure from the media community to accommodate experienced journalists when no other channel will. His willingness to do so has earned him genuine goodwill in journalism circles, even as it raises commercial questions about the channel’s long-term sustainability strategy.

11 PM Weekends — What to Expect

The show will air 11:00 PM to 11:59 PM on weekends, a slot with lower viewership expectations than weekday prime time but providing both anchors a genuine national platform.

Whether Chaudhry can rebuild the kind of loyal audience Kal Tak commanded over 18 years remains the central question. Weekend late-night political analysis is a different battlefield. But Pakistani audiences have long memories for familiar faces they once trusted — and Javed Chaudhry spent 18 years earning that trust.

    MediaBites Congratulates

An anchor returning after nine difficult months deserves acknowledgment. An investigative journalist getting a national platform after regional exile deserves recognition.

MediaBites congratulates Javed Chaudhry and Sattar Khan. Eighteen years of Kal Tak built something real. We hope this new chapter honours that legacy. Good luck to both.
