A tragic late-night crash in Sydney has left the Pakistani community across Australia in deep shock after 22-year-old Pakistani student and Uber driver Shoaib Hussain lost his life during what became his final ride.
Shoaib had moved from Pakistan to Australia at the age of 18, carrying the same dreams shared by thousands of overseas Pakistanis — a better future, financial stability, and support for the family waiting back home.
For the past four years, his life has revolved around hard work and sacrifice. He worked as a caregiver for people with disabilities, studied alongside his job, and spent weekends driving for Uber to cover expenses and build a future for himself and his loved ones.
Friends say Shoaib made one final phone call shortly before the accident. Calm and exhausted after a long shift, he reportedly told a close friend he would finish “just one last ride” and then head home.
Perhaps, like many overseas workers, he was thinking about the family he had not seen in four years. Maybe he was planning an Eid surprise for his mother, gifts for his siblings or simply dreaming about returning home after years of struggle abroad.
According to reports, around midnight, Shoaib picked up a young passenger named Seamus, who had reportedly been celebrating his birthday and was on his way home.
But minutes later, tragedy struck.
Reports say police had attempted to stop another vehicle shortly before the crash for a welfare check. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly sped away. Around 12:35 am, the same vehicle reportedly lost control, smashed through concrete barriers, and launched into the air before crashing directly onto Shoaib’s car.
Witnesses described the scene as horrifying. A loud explosion-like sound drew dozens of people to the area. Nearly 40 bystanders reportedly rushed to help, with some attempting to control the fire and rescue those trapped inside.
But it was too late.
Shoaib, his passenger Seamus, and the other driver all died in the devastating collision.
Back in Pakistan, Shoaib’s mother was still waiting for her youngest son. The family’s world collapsed with a single phone call. The WhatsApp number, once filled with voice notes, missed calls, and family messages, has now fallen permanently silent.
Friends remember Shoaib as humble, hardworking, and deeply devoted to his family. They say he carried enormous responsibilities on young shoulders but never stopped smiling or dreaming.
Community members say funeral prayers will be arranged in Melbourne after investigations are completed, allowing friends and fellow Pakistanis to say their final goodbye.
The tragedy has also sparked emotional conversations within overseas Pakistani communities about loneliness, exhaustion, and the unseen struggles faced by migrant workers trying to support families thousands of miles away.
For many, Shoaib’s story is painfully familiar — long shifts, sleepless nights, endless sacrifices, and dreams carried quietly in the heart.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
